This is a report from No.3 Cairn (2,080 m above sea level) to Maruyama Cairn (2,430 m). The snow had already melted along the trail to Shimo-no-kaba and it was easy to walk on even though we had rain yesterday. I found clouds welling up in the sky over the southern slope of Nature Trail on my way to Ue-no-kaba, which looked magnificent along with the sea of clouds.

The route via Ougi-no-Setsuden is closed due to the remaining snow, so take the direct route along the ridgeline to go to Maruyama Cairn from Ue-no-kanba. One of the two snow valleys was so steep that I attached crampons and went up along the red signs.

Alpine plants, such as Umehatazao, Iwakagami, Hakusan Taigeki, Minezakura, Okamenoki, MitsubaOuren and Iwanashi, were at their best. I found buds of Ibuki Jakoso on the rock (shown in the photo) as I went further over Shimo-no-kaba.

I arrived at Maruyama Cairn in about 1 hour from Happo-ike Pond, taking some breaks in between. The cool breeze felt nice on the top. “We enjoy your reports! It’s such beautiful weather today.”, staff members at Tsugaike Hutte said. I also enjoyed a chat with a man from Tokushima.

Snow was still left between Maruyama Cairn and Mt. Karamatsu Chojo Sanso. I gave up climbing Mt. Karamatsu today as it got cloudy and too foggy. I attached crampons just in case to prevent sliding down when I went down as I was tired.
