Ontake 2240 / ○80cm / Sunny2021.Apr.06

21040601_ontakeWhile the majority of ski resorts across Japan closed for the season on Apr. 4 (Sun.), Ontake 2240 is scheduled to remain open until Apr. 18 (Sun.), and it is still possible to ski and snowboard on a total of 7 courses; excluding the closed Panorama C, Karamatsu and 4B courses. The soft, granular snow surface of the Mikasa Wing slope (pictured) was tinted black in areas due to the accumulation of small, fallen pine needles – but had no effect on skiing conditions.

21040602_ontakeThere were similar soft granular snow conditions on the Paradise Course, where it is necessary to pass under the lift line near the middle of the run and merge onto the Central Course to continue down. (※The bottom portion of Paradise is closed.)  The banked slalom run at the top is expected to remain open as long as conditions allow. I spoke to a group of 3 snowboarders from Osaka (pictured, 2nd – 4th from left) and was told, “We’ve been riding with one of the diggers today. 2240 is so fun that we always end up here.”

21040603_ontakeAbout half of the soft, slushy Expert Course is currently covered in large moguls (pictured). The ungroomed snow surface near the No. 7 Quad was slightly uneven in areas, and there were occasional spots where the ground was exposed. Also, the terrain park that had been located on the Paradise Course was in the middle of being relocated and I could see 3 kickers being prepared.

21040604_ontakeThe immaculately-groomed Central Course featured a moderately soft, granular snow surface that made for great skiing conditions. There were excellent views of the Central Alps from the Expert Course (pictured). Currently the only option to return to the base of the resort on skis is the Family Course, where the snow cover stretches to about the width of a single grooming machine.
