The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that “the rainy season has started in the Kinki, Tokai and Kanto-Koshinetsu region on June 6 (Wed).” It rained on and off yesterday but it cleared up early this morning. It was foggy and clouds were repeatedly gathering and breaking when I arrived in front of Happo-ike Sanso by the gondola and lifts around 8:30 a.m..

The remained snow on the course between No.2 Cairn and Happo Cairn had much thawed. It was only a short distance that was covered with snow. However, I walked carefully because the snow containing rainwater was soft and slippery.

I found Miyama-Azumagiku, Harurindo, Iwakagami everywhere and Umehatazao on rocky area and gravely sand. The northern slope of Happo-ike Pond was turning into a field of Kijimushiro (shown in the photo) and Yukiwariso, which was fascinating.

It was foggy around Happo-ike Pond around 10:00 a.m.. Although I was sweaty after climbing, I could cool down thanks to the moderately strong wind. Sunbeams pouring down through the clouds were reflecting in the water and the snow was shining emerald green.

Although I could not get the view of the Northern Alps, I ran into a ptarmigan on the eastern slope of Happo-ike Pond! It had the summer coat and red comb was visible above the eye. The ptarmigans raise the elevation as the snow disappearing and move their habitat in the Japanese stone pine zone in about a month.
