Tsugaike Kogen / ◎299cm / Sunny2022.Mar.30

22033001_tsugaikeToday I set my sights on the Tsugaike Ropeway in order to take full advantage of the beautiful weather. I met a group of 5 snowboarders from Hakuba (pictured), who said to me, “We love your site! We’re heading up to Tenguhara. If we get lost or injured, please give this photo to the rescue team to help in the search.” All jokes aside, it is required to submit a Mountaineering / Backcountry Registration Form when using the ropeway.

22033002_tsugaikeThe forest road course stretching between the Tsugaike Nature Park Visitor’s Center and the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured) was very well-groomed. There were spring snow conditions on the surface of the groomed and ungroomed areas alike, but because the slushy top layer was relatively thin, it was easy to walk even without snowshoes. On the other hand, those conditions made it feel like the brakes were being applied a bit to my skis.

22033003_tsugaikeDue to the strong sunshine it felt really warm, almost hot, and as I set out to walk to the far end of the Nature Park, I immediately had to take off my jacket. I crossed paths with a man from Hakuba (pictured), who told me he often checks our resort reports and went on to say, “Conditions won’t hold up much past the morning. I’m going to head over to the Kanayama-sawa.”

22033004_tsugaikeGoing back to the start of the day, the groomed Karamatsu Slope (pictured) featured a moderately-firm granular-snow surface before the gondola began operation. At around 8:20, the surface snow in the area alongside the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair and on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope were already starting to moisten up. Owing to the fact that it is now school spring holidays, the slopes were busy with families.
