Tsugaike Kogen / ◎382cm / Snowy2022.Feb.26

22022601_tsugaikeDespite the COVID pandemic leading to big cuts in advertising budgets and less frequent resort reports this year, I was still able to run into 3 snowboarders from Fukuoka Prefecture (pictured) today that I seem to cross paths with every year. They greeted me saying, “Long time no see! We still check your reports all the time. This is our second trip to Tsugaike this season and our last day here, and after we wrap things up today we’ll start the 14-hour trip back home. Up until yesterday we were riding Monster Cliff’s Hakuba Special.”

22022602_tsugaikeThe contrast between the perfect blue sky and the pure white of the Northern Alps with today’s clear weather was incredibly beautiful (1st photo). It was smooth, enjoyable skiing on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope, where the powder-snow surface was groomed to just the right firmness! By the way, snow scooters (pictured), snow bikes (snowmoto), snowskates and other similar items are allowed on all of Tsugaike’s runs. (※Sleds are limited to the Kane-no-naru-oka, Oya-no-hara and Karamatsu Slopes.)

22022603_tsugaikeIt was a busy start to the day with the gondola side of the main, Central Parking Lot and the Champion Parking Lot already full by around 8:00. Yet, in contrast to the early bustle of activity on the Oya-no-hara and Han-no-ki slopes, the Gotemba Course (pictured) was relatively quiet starting out. I found that my skis slid really well on the firmly-groomed, powder-snow surface.

22022604_tsugaikeThe groomed snow surfaces of the Shirakaba Slope (pictured), as well as the Karamatsu and Oya-no-hara Slopes were composed of wet snow, but were easy to ski and had the feeling of powder. Overnight radiative cooling saw the temperatures plunge early this morning, but with the sun out I didn’t feel cold (and even felt a little too warm).
