Tsugaike Kogen / ◎328cm / Snowy2022.Feb.10

22021001_tsugaikeThis morning, the benches set up outside the gondola to make it easier for boarders to strap in, had been moved to a location (pictured) that enabled them to get an easier start down the slope. The snow falling across the HAKUBA VALLEY this morning arrived at Tsugaike later than the resorts on the southern side of the valley, with a light snow beginning around 7:30, and intensifying around 9:00.

22021002_tsugaikeThe groomed Han-no-ki Slope (pictured) featured a well-packed powder snow surface over its upper portion, while the bottom half had a similarly firm wet snow surface. It was great snow conditions from top to bottom, but flat morning light made it difficult to distinguish variations in the surface and slope angle, so I was careful to ski slowly.

22021003_tsugaikeI had a brief chat with an instructor for the Tsugaik Ski School (pictured), who mentioned that there weren’t many customers this morning, and that he was hoping for some people to sign up for lessons. Over on the Maruyama Slope, the groomed snow surface was again made up of firmly-packed wet snow. As I skied lower down the mountain I found that the groomed, wet snow on the Karamatsu and Oya-no-hara Slopes had softened up slightly in comparison.

22021004_tsugaikeThe Tsuga No. 2 Pair was inoperable today due to inspection / maintenance. It was there that I ran into a backcountry tour, who told me, “We don’t know exactly where we are headed today, but we’re ready to have a good time!” In other news, this weekend on 2/12 (Sat.) and 2/13 (Sun.), a Valentine Fair is taking place at the Yuki-no-Hiroba’s restaurant Yeti. Customers spending ¥1,200 or more will receive a complimentary 3-piece “chocolate fountain” set with strawberry, marshmallow and baguette.
