Snow was gently falling at the top of the ski resort, where the sun quietly slipped in and out of the clouds, alternately casting rays of sunlight and shadows on the slopes. The owner of the steak restaurant NIKU-masa (pictured, center), located in Hakuba’s Echoland, greeted me with a “good morning,” before skiing away on the freshly groomed slope.

There was around 2 to 3cm of light, fluffy fresh snow covering the groomed surface of the top half of the Han-no-ki Course. The top half of the run (pictured, 1st photo) featured a relatively firm, packed-powder groomed surface, while the mid to bottom section had a tightly-groomed wet snow surface. The conditions were good for enjoyable, speedy runs from top to bottom.

Once again, a fluffy layer of around 2cm of snow dusted over the firm, wet snow surface of the groomed Shirakaba Slope (pictured). In related news, there are currently four restaurants open around the gondola mid station’s “Yuki no Hiroba” area (pictured, background): Burger King, Yeti, Konayuki Cafe and Kimagure Hachibei.

Around 9:30 there seemed to be more sunlight reaching the slopes. Conditions were excellent for skiing on the Karamatsu (pictured) and Oya-no-hara slopes, where yet again, roughly 2cm of fresh snow rested atop the firmly-groomed, wet snow surfaces. It seemed that there were quite a few people this morning making laps of the full distance from the top of the gondola to the bottom.
