Thanks to the heavy snow that began the day before, the mid to lower section of the Han-no-ki Slope was able to open up on 12/18 (Sat.). Two days later, on 12/20 (Mon.), the Karamatsu Slope (pictured) followed suit, making it possible to enjoy a long, continuous run stretching 5km from the top of the resort to the bottom. The same day, the Kane-no-naru-oka Slope’s Skyliner II Lift began operating for the season as well.

Conditions were great on the beginner slope paralleling the Han-no-ki High Seed Pair Lift (pictured), at the top of the Han-no-ki Slope. The tightly-packed powder snow surface was topped with a thin covering of fresh snow. Further down towards the middle of the run, the groomed slope featured a firm, wet snow surface. There I spoke with a skier from the Kyoto area who told me, “I love your site. The groomed area is a bit narrow and the snow is kind of hard here.”
[Han-no-ki]
The moderately-firm, groomed wet snow on the bottom section of Han-no-ki (pictured), had already begun to soften up, but my skis still slid well across the surface and there were almost no bushes or other obstacles. A couple from Mie Prefecture, who I ran into, mentioned how happy they were that it was now possible to ski the resort from top to bottom. The snow surface on the Karamatsu Slope was noticeably softer than the end of Han-no-ki, and I did notice some exposed bushes.

It was a nice calm morning with high clouds hovering high in the sky. Conditions on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope were characterized by a nicely-firm, groomed wet snow surface with a thin covering of fresh snow. I noticed a number of intermediate to advanced skiers and boarders taking advantage of the good conditions first thing in the morning by making continuous speedy, tight turns.
