Overnight temperatures dropped well below freezing, and the gauge in my car this morning, as I was parked in the parking lot at around 7:00, read -6℃. As I stepped off the gondola and sank into the crisp, freshly groomed snow I was buzzing with excitement. The firm snow surface along the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair Lift (pictured) made for a few great runs to start the day.

I ran into a skier who called out to me saying, “I love your site! What a fantastic, sunny morning.” It turns out the skier was the owner of NIKU MASA, a steak restaurant in Echoland. I also heard from a number of parties on the Tsuga-no-mori Slopewho said they would be heading into the backcountry around the Tsugaike Nature Park today.

There were fantastic dry, powder snow conditions on the top to middle portion of the central, groomed section of the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured)! Towards the end of the run the snow surface was made up of more of a well-packed wet snow, but overall conditions were good, and I found it easy to control my edges and make smooth turns. During the morning it seemed that more people were skiing parallel to the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair, and because of that Tsuga-no-mori was relatively empty.

Direct, warm sunlight across the Han-no-ki Slope around 9:00 meant that the snow surface had already begun to loosen up. In other news, this Sunday (12/19), will be the first edition of the “Kids Ski Free Day” promotion. (※Going forward, it will be held on the third Sunday of each month.) Lift tickets for elementary school aged children will be free!
