The Kane-no-naru-oka and Shirakaba slopes closed for the season yesterday, so as of today skiing and snowboarding at Tsugaike is limited to 5 areas; Tsuga-no-mori (+ Gotemba), Han-no-ki, Maruyama, Oya-no-hara and Karamatsu. The rains from yesterday receded and the clouds that hung over the resort in the pre-business early morning hours melted away revealing a pristine blue sky. The cloudless sky meant strong direct sunlight and quickly warming temperatures, and with that a number of visitors could be seen shedding their jackets early on.

Though the groomed surfaces of the Tsuga-no-mori (pictured) and the upper portion of the Han-no-ki slopes were beginning to soften up, my skis slid easily across the snow and I was able to execute smooth turns in both areas. However, the further I descended down Han-no-ki, the more the snow grew soft and sticky. I was able to ski down to the gondola mid-station without any issues, and didn’t notice any areas where the snow had thinned to the point of exposing the ground.

It was spring conditions on the groomed, granular snow surfaces of the Oya-no-hara (pictured) and Karamatsu slopes. Yet despite the snow’s dirty appearance in spots, overall it was smooth skiing conditions. The Tsugaike Central Triple lift will be ending operation for the season on 3/31 (Wed.)

While the current Han-no-ki area edition of TG PARKS will be closing on 3/31 (Wed.), the terrain park’s planned spring move and 4/1 (Thurs.) reopening on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope is coming along nicely. In other news, those hoping to head into the Tsugaike backcountry should be aware that the service road climbing from Tsuga-no-mori up to the Tsugaike Nature Park is scheduled to close on 4/4 (Sun.). The ropeway itself is set to operate on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of April, as well as daily during the Golden Week holiday period, from 4/29 (Thurs.) to 5/5 (Wed.).
