It was a cold, windless start to the day with the surface of the snow glittering in the light like a thousand tiny diamonds. The first skier on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope this morning said, “I’ve been skiing in the area since Sunday and today is my last day. It’s been nice because Sunday was hot and yesterday was snowing, so I’ve been able to experience a range of conditions. Today the slopes look pretty good.”

It was perfect groomed conditions on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured), where the tightly-packed fine powder exquisitely squeaked when walked on!My edges bit and gripped the snow with ease making for smooth turns on repeat. The weather was fickle with high clouds moving quickly above and the mountains fading in and out of view.

It was a mixed bag on the groomed Han-no-ki Slope, with moderately firm powder snow overall interspersed with occasional spots of hard, rough snow. Even still, it was possible to comfortably maintain an edge and keep up my speed.I observed a lot of intermediate to advanced skiers and boarders taking long, fast non-stop laps on repeat using the gondola and Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad.

A seasonal staff member working at the resort’s Tsugaike Rest House (pictured, left) greeted me saying, “I always check your reports. Today I’m skiing with a few of my friends. We’re all seniors in university and we’re here on the slopes to celebrate that fact that all of us have secured jobs for after we graduate.”
