The top of the ski resort was a different world; a world of powder snow and rime ice.Standing above the clouds on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope, there were excellent views of Hakuba’s peaks to the south and a sea of clouds spreading out to the east. Two women from Hakuba village (pictured) stopped me, saying, “We always check your reports. It feels like there’s quite a bit of people up here today, probably since the weather and conditions are good.”

The warm weather that had lingered around for the last 6 days since last Friday (1/22) finally gave way to the cold once more. The Tsuga-no-mori Slope (1st photo) and Gotenba Course (pictured here) both featured ideal groomed packed-powder conditions, perfect for maintaining an edge and riding comfortably at speed!

Visibility decreased after descending down to the area around the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair Lift. The surface of the steep, groomed slope lying at the middle of the Han-no-ki Course was covered in firmly packed, granular “corn snow.”I spent some time talking with a skier and boarder from Aichi (pictured), who said, “We love your reports. We came for an overnight skiing trip, but we’re heading back today. Visibility was really bad for a little bit there, but thankfully it’s much better here.”

The Maruyama and Kane-no-naru-oka (pictured) slopes were well groomed with densely packed granular snow conditions, perfect for smooth and easy turns.A group of elementary school students from Gifu Prefecture were taking lessons on the expansive slopes of Kane-naru, while a separate group of high school students from Nara Prefecture were receiving instruction on the steeper Maruyama Slope.
