Sugadaira Kogen / ◎155cm / Sunny2022.Mar.12

22031201_sugadairaToday was the first day of the 10th Annual Smile Cup & Test Ride Event (pictured), a snowboard slalom competition taking place on 3/12 (Sat.) and 3/13 (Sun.) in the Ura Taro area’s Kamoshika Course. In addition, associate instructor certification for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is concurrently taking place, and the ski resort was busy with people from the early morning hours. As of 7:00, the Ura Taro parking lot was already around 80% full. (※ It filled up entirely by 8:30)

22031202_sugadairaBecause of the ongoing tournament, Stage 3 is beginning operation at 7:45, while the other lifts start at 8:00 this weekend. In continuation from yesterday, temperatures again today crested above freezing, with the weather taking on a very spring-like vibe. The Ura Taro Family West and East (pictured) areas featured firmly-groomed wet-snow surfaces that had already begun to soften and slush by around 9:00.

22031203_sugadairaToday the Smile Cup hosted competition in PGS (parallel giant slalom, pictured), and tomorrow will switch over to PSL (parallel slalom). Total prize money for the official PGS pro tour competition sits at ¥1,000,000! After the awards ceremonies are completed a rock, scissors, paper tournament open to anyone and everyone will be held, in which the top prize is a cool ¥100,000.

22031204_sugadairaI briefly caught up with the head of the Smile Snowboard School (pictured, left), who commented that it was the perfect day to hold the tournament. A regular customer of the school standing with her (pictured, right) said that she was going to participate in the race to compete for the prize money, and that she would give it her all. In addition to the competition, the Hinode Lodge parking lot is also now hosting the Obuse de Flea Market in Sugadaira Kogen.
