Sugadaira Kogen / ○75cm / Sunny2021.Jan.14

21011401_sugadairaA beautiful and refreshingly blue sky spread across the horizon, confirming the high probability of clear weather that had been forecasted. Though the air was quite chilly, the lack of wind kept the feeling of being cold to a minimum. The groomed runs throughout the Davos area featured tightly packed powder that groaned and squeaked with each step across the surface.

21011402_sugadairaSugadaira is known for its many broad slopes, and amongst them the wide-open runs of the Omote Davos East (pictured) and Omote Davos West courses (see first photo) are particularly impressive. For a short while even after the lifts began operating at 8:30 the number of customers was still sparse, and I took advantage of the empty slopes to paint artistic traces upon the groomed corduroy canvas with my skis for a full 3 or 4 laps along the Beat Lift (724m).

Compared to the lonely runs on Omote Davos, the Ura Taro Family West (pictured), Ura Taro Family East and Schi Heil courses were bustling centers of activity. Demonstration skiers and alpine snowboarders, as well as the students participating in ski and snowboard lessons carved tracks into the snow one after another.

Two people visiting from Saitama exclaimed, “The groomers are nice. And the weather and views are fantastic!” An important administrative note: the Schneider Triple, Grand Triple, Omatsu No. 3 Pair and Tsubakuro No. 2 Pair lifts are out of operation until after tomorrow Jan. 15 (Fri.) Also, Sunday of this upcoming weekend, Jan. 17, is the first Kids Day of the season – where elementary school children and younger ski for free!
