I caught up with a family from Shizuoka Prefecture who told me, “We’ve been coming to Kurohime every year for the last 7 or 8 years. We started around 9:00 and spent the last 2 hours making this kamakura (snow shelter) from scratch.” The was around 20 to 30cm of fresh dry snow in the KURHOME FAMILY PARK, which was perfect conditions for crafting kamakura.

With the polar air mass picking up moisture over the Sea of Japan and settling over the Hokura area, the last two days have seen around 60cm of fresh snowfall, with more than 40cm settling on the ungroomed portion of the Shirakaba Course since just yesterday evening. Even the groomed areas offered roughly 30cm of fluffy, fresh powder.

I ran into a few students on spring vacation, with one of them telling me, “She (pictured, right) is from Osaka, I’m (pictured, left) from Nagano Prefecture. Today is her first day on a snowboard, so we’ll probably spend the whole day doing lessons. We’ll be out here again tomorrow!” Incidentally, though she fell over and over, she kept a smile on her face the whole time.

Conditions were fantastic for practicing on the groomed runs of the KUROHIME FAMILY PARK (pictured), Shinanoki Course and Cosmos Course, with moderately-firm, powder-snow skiing surfaces. Also, the ungroomed portion on the skier’s right side of Cosmos had approximately 30cm of light, new snow covering over a soft base.
