Light snow was blowing in on the back of a weak northerly wind. I ran into a family visiting from Azumino, and the father said, “We always check your site! We didn’t realize until we were already at the ticket window that today is a ‘Kids Ski Free’ day. Our youngest is able to ski now, so we’re all going to head to Course 1 together.”

At the top of the Ipponbuna Downhill Course, the center line of the run was groomed. The pisten-packed wet snow below was covered in a thin layer of dry, fresh snow; good conditions for smooth and easy turns. The middle to end portion of the course remained ungroomed, and while there were some uneven lines leftover from the previous day, they were soft enough to not have an impact on skiing.

Another father (pictured), this time from Kyoto, flagged me down and besides letting me know that he’s a fan of our site, mentioned that he brought his children out to take advantage of the ‘Kids Ski Free day.’ He asked, “Is there any way you can mention us on your report?” Conditions were comfortable on the wide-open and well-groomed Kashima slope, with the wet snow being sufficiently packed for easy turns.

After a brief warm spell, typical January temperatures returned to the area yesterday, and this morning the resort was covered in rime ice, giving it a beautiful, mystical appearance. Around 10cm of new snow could be found in the tree run area (pictured), which covered over the moderately hardened bumps and uneven surface below. It was fun slipping over the surface of and through the light, fresh snow.
