The 49th Annual Iwatake National Student Ski Competition (Demonstration Skiing Category) is now taking place over the 6-day period from 2/23 (Wed.) to 2/28 (Mon.) on the village side of the mountain! Due to concerns over COVID-19, last year’s tournament was limited to individual competition only, but this year it’s back to the standard club competition format.

The men’s main competition kicked off with parallel turns on the C course (pictured) at the top of the Kamoshika Racing area at 9:00. Cheering (in a loud voice) is being discouraged in an effort to safeguard against the spread of COVID-19, but even still, the athletes’ passion was clearly evident. I spoke with a member of the competition committee who commented about how happy he was to have the tournament being held in great weather, with great snow conditions.

The sun came out in earnest around 10:00 as the women’s competition began, leading to slightly damp conditions on the moderately-firm, powder-snow surfaces of the sun-exposed Up Bahn and Big Bahn courses. Going forward the tournament schedule will see the finals of the individual competition take place tomorrow, 2/26 (Sat.), the rookie and group competition begin on 2/27 (Sun.), and the conclusion of the group competition on 2/28 (Mon.).

There were occasional flutters of snow along with a weak wind blowing on the mountain side. There were periods of sunlight as well, and overall it was comfortable conditions for being outside. Skiing conditions were fantastic on the immaculately-groomed South Slope, with a pleasantly-firm powder-snow surface..
