Despite the blue skies visible to the east, the major peaks of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range were covered with billowing, cotton-shaped clouds consistent with strong winds, and I could feel the extremely cold north wind even here on the South Slope during the morning. Conditions were excellent, with the wide-open powder-snow surface pressed firm by the groomers! Getting and keeping and edge was easy, and enabled me to enjoy a series of sharp, snappy turns.

Conditons were just as excellent over on the Sawa Course, which opened on New Year’s Day, where once again the groomed run sported a moderately-firm, packed powder surface. The ungroomed area (formely known as “Hilltop”) was topped off with around 10 to 20cm of fluffy, fresh snow. I was able to maintain good float, but even the underlying base was relatively soft which made for some relaxed powder runs.

The old Kamo 4 Slope was groomed down the middle to the width of 1 to 1.5 grooming machines with all other areas remaining ungroomed. Here too there was roughly 10 to 20cm of new soft, new snow, which provided plenty of fun all the way to SONEZAWA. The groomed Sunny Valley Course and Paradise Slope were in top form as well, with a pleasantly-firm packed-powder surface.

I chatted with the father of a family from Hyogo, that brought their soon-to-be 14-year-old dog, who told me, “We spent one night in Kanazawa, began skiing here at Iwatake yesterday, and will stay until the day after tomorrow. We chose Iwatake since we could bring our pet with us.” For reference, roundtrip fare on the gondola for pets is JPY700.
