We’re already down to the last week of the season at Iwatake. With warm morning temperatures accompanying a hazy spring sky today, many visitors could be seen on the slopes wearing only hoodies, light jackets or fleeces. As is usually the case on the weekend, the crowds began arriving to the mountain early.
[South Slope]
From the outset the hard, groomed granular surface of the South Slope (pictured) had already loosened up nicely and conditions were great for consistent, comfortable turns. However, the rising temperature along with a steady stream of new tracks began to turn the snow to slush within 30 quick minutes.

The groomed, granular snow over on the VIEW C Course was wet where exposed to sunlight, but still holding firm in the shaded areas. Although the snow did vary considerably from sun to shade, in general I found that my skis slid easily and I was able to enjoy some fun, speedy runs. Two skiers (pictured) greeted me as they skied past gracefully saying, “We love your site.”
[VIEW C]
Snow on the Sawa Course (pictured) was soft and damp, while conditions were an even more pronounced spring-like slush over on Sunny Valley and Paradise. While there are prominent areas of bare earth towards the foot of the mountain, there is plenty of snow remaining on the courses themselves, and still no exposed ground or underbrush to be found. It is possible to ski without issue all the way down to the gondola.
