Beginning today and continuing until 5/8 (Sun.), the gondola is moving up its start time to 7:30! (Weekdays 8:00?, may be delayed by weather.) Early this morning on the groomed section of Usagidaira (pictured), the surface of the run was relatively firm, but from the mid-point and below the granular snow was noticeably softer. With those conditions my skis slid well, and made for enjoyable, speedy runs.

Today saw the Banked Slalom H-ONE in Happo (pictured) taking place, which is the last event in the series that was held earlier at Iwatake and Tsugaike. This time around there was no snowskate competition, but with the addition of a ski category, a whopping 255 participants were registered to battle it out!

The specially-prepared competition course was set up on the north side of Panorama, starting around mid-slope, entering into the forest, emerging around the forest road and continuing right up to the entrance of the Panorama Pair. Because of high winds, a hurried decision was made around 8:00 to change the competition method from two runs to a single timed run.

It was fun, soft granular-snow conditions on the deep, repeating moguls in the area alongside the Alpen Quad (pictured). The area is one of the main attractions at Happo during this time of the season, and I noticed a steady stream of peopple dropping in. In other news, HAKUBA MOUNTAIN BEACH is opening for a limited 10-day period from 4/29 (Fri., holiday) until 5/8 (Sun.)!
