It was a wonderful, windless and warm spring day, perfect for skiing and snowboarding. Three snowboarders riding the Alpen Quad (pictured) greeted me from their lofty position as they headed upwards. All of the 6 courses currently open had soft spring-snow conditions from the start of the day.
[Usagidaira Slope]
During the early morning hours, the soft surface layer of snow on the Usagidaira Slope (pictured) was relatively thin, and the edges of my skis were able to grip the moderately-firm underlying base comfortably. As I made my way further down, the layer of soft snow became noticeably thicker, and by the entrance to the Panorama Course I found my edges sinking in deeply, giving me the feeling that the brakes were being applied.

There were a total of 9 mogul lanes on the gentle slope area between the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad and Kurobishi No. 3 Pair. I had a quick chat with a high schooler from Saitama Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “I always check your site! I love that Happo has several mogul areas this late into the season.”

The hazy spring sky still provided excellent views of the 3 major Hakuba peaks (pictured) and the long, extended ridge of the Ushiro Tateyama Mountain Range. Conditions were pretty slushy on the Skyline Course (pictured). By the way, the Karamatsu-dake Chojo Sanso, as well as Hakuba Sanso, and Sarukura-so are opening for business on 4/29 (Fri., holiday). (※Happo-ike Sanso is open year-round, and all huts mentioned here require reservations in advance.)
