First thing this morning, the groomed granular-snow surface of the Panorama Course was moderately soft. I was greeted by two snowboarders from Yamanashi Prefecture (pictured) who told me, “We love your site! The snow is still relatively firm and easy to board on. And without direct sunlight, these conditions might hold up a while!”

Thanks to plentiful snowfalls this winter, Happo continues to operate with 6 lifts and 6 slopes open. Between 4/29 (Fri., holiday) and 5/1 (Sun.) and once again from 5/3 (Tue., holiday) to 5/5 (Thurs., holiday), the Kokusai No. 1 Pair, Kokusai No. 3 Pair and Kurobishi No. 3 Pair are also scheduled to operate. The Usagidaira Kids Park is still open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and free shuttle buses are running on Saturdays and Sundays until 4/24 (Sun.), and daily from 4/29 (Fri., holiday) to 5/8 (Sun.) as well.

There were several lanes of deep, irregular moguls on the slope located alongside the Alpen Quad (pictured). The rain that fell during the day yesterday contributed to the discoloration of the snow surface, but I didn’t notice any bushes or patches of bare earth, and the slushy snow made for forgiving conditions.

Early this morning it was possible to see a sea of clouds from the top of the resort, but around 8:30 clouds began to form and rise up from the valleys to the south, casting fog across the upper slopes. The groomed granular-snow surface of Riesen Grat was already soft and slushy by the time the Grat Quad began running. Even still, I didn’t notice it slowing me down, and was able to enjoy my runs.
