It’s the time of year in which we say farewell to snow and ice-covered roads; that time of year in which we can enjoy the cherry blossoms beginning to bloom around Matsumoto on the way to Hakuba to ski the copious amounts of snow still blanketing the upper portions of the resort. Today at 8:30, it was a calm, sunny day with some haze and the firmly-groomed granular snow surface of the top of Usagidaira had begun to loosen up slightly.

First thing this morning, the groomed, granular snow of the Panorama Course was moderately firm (pictured), but after 9:00 had begun to soften. I was very easily able to link together smooth and controlled turns thanks to the even snow surface.

I caught up with two skiers currently staying long term in Hakuba and Otari villages (pictured), who told me, “We always use your site! We love Snownavi and find the information to be very accurate and helpful. There was so much snow this season, so we’re still enjoying ourselves!”

By the time the Riesen Grat and Grat Quad at the top of the ski resort began operating, it was already slushy, spring snow conditions. I noticed quite a few hikers and backcountry skiers putting on their crampons and skins in front of the Happo-ike Sanso before setting out to climb higher.
