From 4/1 (Fri.) to 4/3 (Sun.), the 22-23 NEW MODEL BLASTRACK TEST RIDE event is taking place in front of the Usagidaira Terrace (FREE, ID required). As I was in the area, a rider from BLASTRACK called out to me saying, “Test rides are free, so don’t hesitate to try!” At the next booth over, Hakuba’s original glove brand DSP was offering customers the chance to try on its gloves.

Cold air moving into the area along with the arrival of a winter-like low pressure system caused yesterday’s rains to turn to snow after dark, and brought around 1cm of new snow to the bottom of the resort, and around 3cm to the top. I was able to comfortably set my edges on the hard-packed groomed granular-snow surface of the Usagidaira Slope (pictured), which was topped off with around 2 to 3cm of fresh snow.

The weak northwesterly winds that were blowing during the early morning hours picked up in intensity around 9:30, and I began to feel a lot colder than I imagined I would. I overheard people dropping into the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) exclaiming surprise and concern at the hardness of the slope surface.

I ran into a skier from Gifu (pictured), who told me, “I love your site. Yesterday I heard that the forecast was for snow, and expected the conditions to be pretty good so I came out to Happo today. I’m happy to be able to ski conditions like this at this point in the season, and happy to run into a reporter from Snownavi. There was around 3cm of new, dry snow covering over the hard-packed granular-snow surface of Riesen Grat.
