Happo reports are currently being put out twice per week during the month of March. This time I was aiming for the weekend, but yesterday started off with strong winds and transitioned into rain, and today I was greeted by thick fog. I spoke with a couple of 12 year olds from Tokyo and Ishikawa Prefecture (pictured) who mentioned that they often check our site and went on to say, “Today we’re taking our badge test! It’s going to be held in the Usuba area, so we think visibility will be ok. We’ll do our best!”

Not long after I spoke with a group of 4 people from Osaka, Aichi and Shizuoka (pictured), who told me, “We love your site. We’re friends who met through skiing. The fog is so thick, we have no idea where we are.” I found that my skis slid well on the spring-like granular snow conditions on the groomed Usagidaira Slope (pictured), Riesen Slalom Course (1st photo) and Panorama Course.

Skiing down in the direction of Sakka, visibility finally improved around the middle of the Olympic Course II (pictured), where the groomed snow surface was noticeably slushy. There I ran into 3 skiers from the Kanto area (pictured), who told me they always check our reports and expressed relief that the fog had thinned. I was also told by a member of the ski patrol that Riesen Grat was now above the clouds.

I was greeted by a skier (pictured) who said they enjoy our site and jokingly asked if I could see them through the fog. So many people took the time to say hi and talk with me this weekend, including instructors from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School. In other news, as of today, the Sakka Kitaone Quad, Nakiyama No. 2 Pair and Sakka No. 2 Pair will be ending operation, and tomorrow begins the spring skiing discount period for adults (1-day ticket, ¥4,500), following the spring skiing discounts that went into effect for elementary school students on 3/1 (Tue.) (JPY1,000).
