Currently, from 3/11 (Sat.) to 3/13 (Sun.), Happo is hosting a Ski Patrol Experience Program, with the aim of developing professionals locally. Today, a 2nd year student from Hakuba High School (pictured, left) was being trained in conducting course checks and treating injuries, as well as avalanche awareness.

Extremely strong, intermittent gusts of wind from the southwest forced the suspension of the Alpen Quad, Grat Quad, Kurobishi No. 2 Quad and Skyline No. 2 Pair lifts. Panorama (1st photo) and the top of Riesen (pictured) both featured firmly-groomed granular-snow surfaces. Heading down the mountain the surface seemed to be loosening up around the middle of Riesen, and there were spring-like soft, granular snow conditions on the Nakiyama and Shirakaba slopes.

In other news, Snow Peak LAND STATION HAKUBA is currently the site of a Winter Tethered Hot Air Balloon Experience (pictured) offered on Sundays until 4/10, beginning at 5:30 a.m. (※Adults ¥2,800, Children (3 Years Old to Elementary) ¥1,800, Children 2 and Under FREE, Dogs 20kg and Under ¥500, Minimum of 12 People). It is also possible to charter the experience for your private group (1 to 5 People, ¥20,000).

The approximately 5-minute flight reaches heights of around 30m, providing breathtaking views of the Happo-One Ski Resort, the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range bathed in the morning sunlight, and the quiet village covered in abundant snow. By the way, temperatures were mild even before the ski resort opened for business today, and by around 9:00 just moving was enough to have me sweating.
