The ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships are underway this week at Happo, taking place over the 4-day period from 3/3 (Thurs.) to 3/6 (Sun.). The first round qualifying events scheduled to take place on the Kurobishi Slope yesterday were called off due to strong winds at the top of the resort, with only one going ahead on the Nakiyama Slope.

Yesterday’s cancellations also resulted in some adjustments to the schedule of today’s second round of qualifying events due to be held on the Usagidaira Slope. The weather at the start of business today was cloudy with occasional flutters of snow, but as the ladies’ second heat began at 9:20 (pictured), the clouds had given way to blue sky. Other events were moved from Kurobishi to Panorama (pictured). The top 90 qualifiers for men, and the top 45 qualifiers for women, based on total score, will advance to tomorrow’s final round. The groomed areas on the southern side of Usagidaira as well as along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, featured firm wet-snow surfaces that had the feeling of powder snow, while conditions were similar on Panorama.

In today’s competition, Yusuke Murakami, also known as “Murakin” from the Team Kinkakuji YouTube channel, showed off particularly impressive skiing. Snow conditions on the Central Course and Shirakaba Sope were spring-like, with a firmly-groomed, granular snow surface that had begun to soften and slush.
