Happo-One / ◎420cm / Snowy2022.Feb.27

The gondola got started on time this morning at 8:00, and as I exited out onto the slopes I was met with almost no wind, but densely falling snow. The wet-snow surface of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) was groomed tightly and topped with 3 to 5cm of new snow. Temperatures at the base of the mountain were relatively high so I was concerned about the quality of the snow, but it was of a pleasantly-surprising, light fluffy type.

I had some trouble seeing details in the snow surface due to the falling snow and fog affecting the Usagidaira and Kurobishi (pictured) slopes, as well as the Skyline Course. I met up with a group of regular visitors to Happo hailing from various places throughout the Kansai area (pictured), who told me they always check our site and commented that the snow was really coming down hard.

I was also told that one of the group’s members had just passed their recent attempt at the Level 1 badge test! In fact, I got to see their fantastic skiing ability for myself on the area alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, where the firmly-groomed, powder-snow surface was covered in roughly 10cm of fresh snow. In other news, today’s ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships’ training session took place on the south side of the Panorama Course, which was sectioned off for that purpose.

Conditions on the groomed Skyline Course were similar to Kurobishi, where the firm, wet-snow surface had the feeling of powder snow, and laid under a layer of 10cm of new snow. I found conditions to be good for skiing in the other groomed areas including Usagidaira, the Kiatone forest cat track and the Sakka and Shirakaba slopes, where the wet-snow surfaces were moderately-tight and topped with between 5 and 10cm of new snow.
