Whether it was because the most recent wave of COVID infections has peaked, or because the first blue skies in a while lured people outside, in either case there was noticeably more traffic in the village and base area this morning than last weekend. In fact, by 8:50, Happo’s No. 3, 6, 8 and 9 parking lots were already full, due in part to the influx of athletes and organizers set to partcipate in the upcoming ski tournament. I also noticed rows of cars parked alongside the road between the Hakuba Tokyu Hotel and Hakuba Mominoki Hotel.

The area paralleling the Alpen Quad (1st photo) was restricted in order to accommodate the 59th Annual ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships Training Days (2/24 〜 28). The super-wide slope alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured) was in excellent condition for some speedy runs this morning, with a tightly-groomed powder-snow surface!

Conditions were the same on Skyline, Usagidaira, Panorama and other groomed runs located on the upper portions of the resort. Heading down towards the Sakka Slope, the groomed surfaces were perceptibly firmer with scattered clumps of snow, which caused my skis to rattle and my edges to lose grip occasionally.

The real story this morning though, was the brilliant blue sky! The three main Hakuba peaks (pictured), along with the extended ridgeline of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range generously revealed their impressive form. I observed a steady stream of mountain climbers and backcountry skiers and boarders heading towards the top of the resort.
