In preparation for the ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships, taking place from 3/3 (Thurs.) to 3/6 (Sun.), participants have begun gathering at Happo. In fact, I was greeted by Miwa Aoki (pictured, left), the 2nd place finisher from last year’s tournament, Mirai Kuriyama (pictured, center), last year’s 7th place finisher and champion from 2017 to 2019, and Yuki Oba (pictured, right), who placed 4th in the last tournament. I’m wishing for their continued success in this year’s tournament as well!

Strong northwesterly winds were blowing at the top of the resort, with whirlwinds forming occasionally as well. The Panorama Course (pictured) was groomed pristinely, and had a fantastic, moderately-soft powder-snow surface. I enjoyed the pleasant feeling of sliding across the fine-quality powder snow.

The groomed areas on the southern side of Usagidaira and alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad had slightly-firmer powder-snow surfaces, and were excellent for smooth, controlled turns. By the way, the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair is set to operate daily from yesterday until the end of the season. (※On the other hand, the Nakiyama No. 2 Pair ended operation two days ago.)

The groomed, powder-snow surface of the Skyline Course (pictured) was reasonably soft. And despite the seemingly unlimited number of tracks marking the ungroomed area, the soft snow surface meant that conditions weren’t nearly as challenging as they looked. The irregurlarly-sized moguls on the steep face of Kitaone were also relatively easy to ski, thanks to the soft surface.
