Amongst the backdrop of lightly falling dry snow, the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) played host to day 1 of the legendary local race; the 76th Annual Riesen Slalom Competition! Because of the large number of entrants and the wide range of ages, from junior high school students to 80 years old and above, the event is broken down into numerous classes and spread out over two days.

As the competition for Men’s Group 7 (80 years old and above) kicked off, warm cheers greeted the competitors from the sides of the course. Just as the race began, the thin blanket of fog that had settled over the starting area began to lift, and the snow stopped. Due to the competition taking place on the Riesen Slope, where groomed conditions were great with a well-packed powder snow surface, a detour course was set up for general skiers.

Though there was almost no wind noticeable around the Usagidaira Terrace, at the top of Usagidaira as well as Kurobishi, there were occasional strong gusts of brisk, northwesterly wind. One section of the Kurobishi Slope (pictured) was roped off due to the 59th Annual All Japan Ski Technical Championships Training Days that are being held from 2/24 (Thurs.) to 2/28 (Mon.). (※The area actually used may be Usagidaira, Kurobishi, or Panorama, depending on conditions.)

It was great skiing conditions on the groomed runs across the resort, with firmly-packed runs topped with 1 to 2 cm of light, fresh powder snow. The weather changed quickly and often this morning, with occasional fog affecting visibility in areas. I spoke with one of the members of the Riesen competition’s organizing committee before the event got started, who was lamenting the fact that the forecast called for sunshine, and commented on how chilly it was.
