Happo-One / ◎400cm / Mostly Sunny2022.Feb.19

22021901_happoRadiative cooling overnight led to very low early morning temperatures, but with no wind I found it quite comfortable outside as the resort opened for business. It was a busy start typical of an average weekend, and I spoke with 3 skiers from Aichi and Nagano (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! Nakiyama was quite crowded, and there was a huge line for the No. 3 Triple.”

22021902_happoPeople getting off the Alpen Quad were looking up at Riesen Grat, which had been closed all day yesterday, and began to gravitate towards the Grat Quad. During a prolonged course check in which only hikers were permitted to board the lift, I overheard comments like, “Even though I know we can’t get on the lift, I couldn’t help but get in line anway after looking at that sweet face.” (※The lift opened after this, at 9:30) I was greeted in Japanese by two Australians living in Hakuba (pictured) who told me they always check our site, and wished me good luck on my report.

22021903_happoThe conditions were fantastic on the groomed area alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured), with a moderately-packed, powder-snow surface! Yet, with so many people heading over to Grat, the slope was pretty empty for a Saturday morning. I talked with a father from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, left), who told me, “I love your site! My kid is currently working hard towards passing their level 2 badge test.”

22021904_happoThere were powder-snow surfaces on the groomed slopes all across the resort, with Riesen (1st photo) and the southern side of Usagidaira being relatively firm, and Skyline and Sakka (pictured) being somewhat softer. I had a quick chat with an instructor from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski & Snowboard School (pictured), who told me that he always checks our site and that the school had a lot of reservations on this Saturday.
