The winter weather system that settled over Hakuba beginning on 2/15 (Tue.), brought copious amounts of snow to local resorts, and now Happo is officially reporting a base of 400cm! The slope area paralleling the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair (pictured), which was a center of the powder frenzy yesterday morning, was back to a full reset today. The first tracks were carved into the silky face at 8:38 this morning, amongst the backdrop light, dry snow carried by a strong north wind.

With temperatures dropping and staying quite low the last two nights, the excellent quality powder snow has been perfectly preserved. There were some spots here and there with a layer of wind crust, but overall the 30 to 40cm of fresh, fluffy powder was more than enough to deliver some fantastic runs! With most people heading to Omusubi, Skyline or alongside the Alpen Quad, the Sodeguro area (pictured) seemed like a secret powder stash.

I noticed quite a few people enjoying some mini tree runs or short, steep descents by shortcutting their way down the first half of the Panorama cat track area (pictured). However, with all that snow, taking a fall in the deep, ungroomed snow and having to search for ski poles, goggles or other gear could have been disastrous. Conditions were excellent on the soft groomers, with light, fresh snow topping things off.

I spoke with a skier (pictured) who had just finished up a run on Omusubi, who told me, “That was amazing! When I dropped in, a lot of the fresh snow had already been tracked out, but I found some untouched powder on the edges. It felt so good.” It was powder snow conditions on the groomed slopes of the Sakka and Shirakaba areas at the base of the mountain as well.
