I ran into a patroller this morning who told me, “Yesterday’s snow was pretty heavy, but it’s great today!” And with that information, I headed to the off-piste Omusubi area (pictured). The snow that has been falling consistently, but with varying intensity since 2/15 (Tue.) had lightened up a bit around the start of business at 8:00.

Dropping in, I found 40 to 50cm of new snow covering most areas, with between 50 and 60cm piled up in the occasional snowdrift. The unique, undulating terain of the slope itself, combined with the feeling of floating on fresh powder made for twice the enjoyment. (※All 3 exit gates for Omusubi are currently open). In related news, the Chanmero Free Ride Omusubi Open will be held here on 2/23 (Wed., holiday).

Going back chronologically, first thing this morning I also thoroughly enjoyed the 40cm of light, fluffy, fresh powder I found alongside the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair (pictured)! Everyone I saw in the area seemed to be equally excited and satisfied, based on the shouts of joy and clouds of powder I witnessed rising up from the slope.

The 3 to 5cm of new, light snow covering the moderately-firm, groomed surfaces alongisde the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured), on the south side of Usagidaira, and on the Skyline and Panorama Courses made for some fast, fun runs. Around 9:30, the snow began to come down stronger. Tomorrow, from 19:30, the 52nd Annual Hakuba Happo-One Fire Festival is set to take place around the Nakiyama Slope’s base area!
