The snow that began falling in earnest yesterday afternoon was continuing to come down with intensity this morning. The Panorama Course’s moderately-soft, groomed powder-snow surface (pictured) was topped off with around 1 to 2cm of new snow. In addition, the 59th Annual All Japan Ski Technical Championships Training Days have been moved to the south side of the Panorama Course.

Over on Urakuro (pictured), an ungroomed 800 meter long course with an average slope angle of 27° and a maximum of 31°, there was roughly 30 to 35cm of fresh snow. I spoke with a married couple from Hakuba (pictured), who commented, “The snow today is pretty heavy. It’s hard to link together turns.”

I later heard an announcement from a member of the ski patrol who had just finished course checks at the top of the resort, saying, “Last’s night’s snow was pretty wet. The snow surface conditions are not very stable, so be careful when heading to the ungroomed areas.” On the ungroomed Skyline Course (pictured), I found there to be 15 to 20cm of new snow accumulated, and thought it seemed lighter than what I encountered on Urakuro.

Snow Plaza Sakka (pictured), located at the base of the Sakka Slope, features the traditional Hakuba Village specialty food ohyokkuri, cakes and sweets baked by the Azumino-based confectionery “Ayaka” and 10 flavors of ice cream. In other words, the selection of Shinshu-area foods and desserts avaialable here goes far beyond that of a normal slopeside eatery!
