The 59th Annual All Japan Ski Technical Championships Training Days are currently being held over the 3-day period from 2/14 (Mon.) to 2/16 (Wed.), on the groomed face alongside the Usagidaira Slope’s Alpen Quad Lift. The course is off limits to the general public from 8:00 to 12:00, but it is possible to view some of Japan’s best skiers up close from the sides of the course.

Large flakes of snow were falling lightly as I exited the gondola. There wasn’t much wind noticeable in the area around the Usagidaira Terrace, but I did experience occasional strong gusts of wind blowing in from the west at the top of Usagidaira and on the Kurobishi Slope. I enjoyed some speedy runs on the groomed portion of Usagidaira (pictured), where the well-groomed, wet-snow surface was topped off with a thin layer of fresh snow.

The area paralleling the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured) also featured a dusting of new snow atop the groomed, firm wet-snow surface. The snow there had the feeling of powder snow, and coming from the groomed area of Usagidaira it was easy to tell the difference in the conditions, in a good way. Around 9:00 the snow began to pick up in intensity.

Unusually, the Skyline Course was ungroomed, and the snow was marked by relatively-firm tracks and undulations leftover from the previous day. The surfaces of the Kitaone Forest Cat Track, Sakka Slope (pictured), and the bottom of the Olympic Course II were composed of well-packed wet snow, with each starting to accumulate a fine covering of new snow.
