With large numbers of people visiting the resort yesterday and no new snowfall, relatively-firm undulations and bumps could be found on the ungroomed areas alongside the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi No. 3 lifts, both sides of Skyline,and on the Central and Olympic I courses. Weather during the daytime on this 3-day weekend has been clear and refreshing. The morning sun pierced through the thin clouds hovering in the eastern sky, shining a soft light onto the slopes.

I was greeted by a skier from Shizuoka Prefecture who told me they loved our site, and went on to say, “I’ve been watching Japanese athletes competed at the Beijing Winter Olympics and it made me really want to get out and ski.” There were so many people out on the slopes this morning that it made the last quiet, empty weekday (Thursday) morning feel like a distant dream. At 9:00 the line in front of the gondola was long enough that it seemed it might stretch all the way to the Shirakaba No. 1 Pair.

There were excellent, packed-powder conditions on the groomed southern route of Usagidaira, the Panorama Course, and alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad! Lower down, from the middle of Skyline to the Sakka Slope, it was more of a firm, wet-snow surface. Of all the areas I skied, I only found rough, granular snow towards the bottom of the Shirakaba Slope.

I ran into 4 expert skiers, of whom the veteran 69 year old told me, “I’m from Omachi. Because of COVID, I spent the last two months mostly at home, but I just couldn’t help myself and escaped out here to ski.” The risk of contracting the virus on the slopes isn’t zero, but it should be very small!
