The snows of yesterday subsided, and the weather this morning was calm and mostly clear, with the sun moving in and out of the clouds. Despite the ongoing quasi-state of emergency and with no end to the pandemic in sight, it was a lively start to the 3-day weekend, with the number of cars on the road and people on the slopes increasing to the levels of a normal weekend.

Conditions were excellent on the groomed Panorama Course, with a moderately-firm powder-snow surface! I was able to control my edges and gain speed effortlessly. The Panorama Course was suprisingly uncrowded in the early morning hours, as most people seemed to head straight for the Riesen Slalom Course.

I ran into a group of 5 from Tokyo and Kanagawa, who told me, “We love your site! It’s been a long time since we’ve had this view of the Alps. The weather and snow quality today are perfect!” This was the first weekend day since 1/23 (Sun.) that I was able to see the three major peaks of Hakuba (pictured), Mt. Goryu and Mt. Kashimayari from the top of the ski resort.

I was also treated to a view of the sea of clouds spreading across the eastern sky. The Riesen Grat Course was entirely ungroomed, but there were almost no bumps or uneven areas, and the soft base was covered in around 10cm of new, fluffy snow that made for some fun runs. The groomed areas of Usagidaira and alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad had similarly good conditions for skiing as the Panorama Course, with well-packed, powder-snow surfaces.
