Light snow began falling across the resort around 7:30 this morning. Forecasts were calling for the possibility of heavy snow across inland areas of the Kanto Koshin region, but typical of a low pressure system hovering over the southern coast – the morning here in Hakuba was pleasant, with little wind and only light snow. The groomed portion at the top of the Usagidaira Slope included some man-made snow, and overall the wet-snow surface was on the hard side. The bottom half of the slope was firm, but not hard, and had a more pleasant powder snow feel.

I enjoyed some turns over on Kurobishi, where once again the firm, wet-snow groomers were composed of wet snow with a powder snow feel. It was similar conditions on the Skyline Course (pictured), though a layer of shaved snow across the surface gave it a slightly softer feel. Entering the Kitaone Forest Cat Track, I found the well-packed wet snow there was great for maintaining speed.

The groomed southern side of the expansive Sakka Slope had a moderately-firm wet snow surface. The wide-open, gentler terrain provided a great setting for a few relaxing runs. In other news, next Friday, 2/18, the 52nd Annual Hakuba Happo Fire Festival is set to take place from 19:30, though due concerns surrounding COVID-19, the festivities will be shorterend this year.

Later in the morning I ran into a gentleman from Niigata’s Joetsu City (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! This is my first time to run into one of Snownavi’s reporters. Today is my first day of the season to visit Hakuba. I knew the weather wasn’t going to be great, but I’m enjoying the lack of crowds.” The snow seemed to pick up in intensity around 10:00 this morning.
