It was a windless morning with thin, wispy clouds streaking across the sky. Although the most recent snowfall subsided yesterday, temperatures remained low, preserving perfect powder snow conditons across the entire resort. I heard the familiar squeak of fine quality snow as I moved across Riesen (pictured), and had some great turns after dropping in.

Snow conditions on the groomed areas on the southern route of Usagidaira (pictured, foreground), the Panorama Course (pictured, background), the area alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, the Skyline Course, Olympic Course II, Sakka Slope, and Shirakaba Slope were all absolutely fantastic. Eventually, the sun broke through the thin veil of clouds, casting sunlight across the upper slopes.

In other news, the country’s top ski and snowboard freeriding competion, the 2022 TOYO TIRES FREERIDE HAKUBA FWQ4*, has been rescheduled for 3/15 (Tue.) to 3/18 (Fri.) due to the current wave of increased COVID-19 infections. (*The competition itself will take place over the course of one day during the 3-day window). In addition, the ALL Japan Ski Techinical Championships are scheduled for 3/3 (Thurs.) to 3/6 (Sun.).
[HAKUBA VALLEY Alpine Area]
Despite the good weather and great conditions, there were surpisingly few people out on the slopes this morning. I was incredibly spoiled to have such excellent groomed conditions nearly all to myself. There seemed to be only a few tracks on Sakka this morning, likely due to there being very few first-timers or beginners out this morning.
