We’re finally on the other side of the extreme winter weather system that moved into the area on 2/4. Fine, dry snow was fluttering on a weak wind, with fog rolling in and out across the resort’s three top slope ares of Usagidaira, Kurobishi and Riesen Grat. This morning the opening of the Grat Quad was delayed due to snow removal work.

I headed out in search of powder on Sodeguro (pictured, 1st photo), where I found 20 to 25cm of fresh snow on the top half of the run, with 15 to 20cm covering the bottom half. There was some noticeable wind crust, but overall I enjoyed the feeling of light, fluffy powder covering over the soft undulating base, despite bottoming out from time to time!

Conditions were fantastic top to bottom on the groomers, with the recent snowfalls and low temperatures leading to packed powder-snow surfaces. The moderately-firm, groomed Usagidaira and Kurobishi areas were topped off with 3 to 5cm of fresh snow, while Panorama (pictured) was dusted with about 1cm. It was easy skiing on each, with grippy snow that allowed for consistent carving.

The firm, mid-sized moguls of the Central Course sat under a layer of around 5cm of fresh snow. Currently, Shirakaba is groomed from side to side to the width of 3 to 4 grooming machines, with separate north, central (pictured) and south runs. And of course, all were in great powder-snow condition.
