Today and tomorrow, a shop-oriented K2 Japan test ride event is underway in front of Usagidaira Terrace. I was able to speak with rider Masaki Kitae (pictured), who told me, “I love your site, and I’ve been hoping to make it into one of Snownavi’s resort reports. We’re going to be holding another test ride event for the general public on 2/5 (Sat.) and 2/6 (Sun.)! I definitely hope people will take advantage of this chance to come out and test out some great gear.”

Light, dry snow was falling at the top of the mountian, carried by a strong wind. I set my sights on some fresh powder and dropped in on the ungroomed area paralleling the Kurobishi No. 3 Pair, where I found 30 to 35cm of new snow! Thanks to consecutive days of fresh accumulations, the underlying base itself was soft, and the fluffy, fresh snow on top provided that perfect powder feeling.

Conditions were great for smooth turns alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad and on the Skyline Course (pictured), where the firmly-groomed powder-snow surfaces were topped off with between 2 and 5cm of fresh snow. However, not long after, the wind picked up a great deal, to the point that it was hard at times to even stand up.

Before 9:00 all lifts at the top of the resort had closed, and those remaining open were limited to the Sakka No. 2 Pair, Shirakaba No. 1 Pair, Nakiyama No. 2 Pair and Nakiyama Triple. As I skied down, the wind was noticeably less intense as I reached the Kitaone Forest Cat Track. It was good skiing conditions on the Sakka and Shirakaba Slopes, where both had moderately-packed, groomed powder-snow surfaces dusted with between 2 and 3cm of new snow.
