This morning snowflakes were fluttering lightly with a weak westerly wind. I spoke with a pair of snowboarders from Okayama and Saitama Prefectures (pictured), who told me, “We met up in Hakuba to go boarding together. When the Grat Quad starts we want to head up to the top of the resort.” A layer of thin clouds spread out before the sun, but the light for this frontlit photo ended up being quite unique.

The sea of clouds was rather low on the mountain (pictured) today, and I noticed a number of people snapping up photos with their phones before continuing down on skis. The groomed portion of Usagidaira (pictured) featured a well-packed, wet-snow surface. The steep, ungroomed slopes along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi No. 3 Pair lifts had a thin dusting of new snow covering the firm, uneven surfaces.

Conditions were still good on the north-facing slope paralleling the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, with a moderately-firm powder-snow surface! Just before opening, I caught a glimpse of a staff member working at Cafeteria Kurobishi commuting to work with an impressive glissade (pictured). Those around me who also noticed let out a laugh. You can see a lot of interesting things at Happo first thing in the morning.

I talked briefly with a couple from Gifu Prefecture who had skied down through the fog to the Usagidaira Terrace, and told me, “We love your site. The unusually-low lying sea of clouds this morning was really something! Today we’re staying overnight at Hotel Hakuba.” By the way, the HAKUBA MOUNTAIN BEACH (pictured, background) is currently closed for the winter season. After taking this photo I headed down, and by the time I reached the firm, wet-snow surface of the groomed Riesen area, I had emerged below the clouds.
