Conditions this morning were ideal in almost all respects, with proper cold temperatures, light, dry snow and almost no wind to speak of. Yet, unfortunately, laughably dense fog had also settled across the mountain. I chatted briefly with a couple from Aichi (pictured), who were the first on the Riesen Quad this morning, and told me, “We love your site! The fog is crazy today, huh? Anyway, we’re still going to go ahead and line up for the Alpen Quad.”

I later spoke with another pair of skiers (pictured), this time from Tokyo, who mentioned, “We’ve been coming to Happo for 50 years now. This fog is pretty bad, so we’re going to head down to the lower slopes.” (50 years!) The groomed portions of Usagidaira, alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured) and the Panorama Course were in excellent condition, with 3 to 4cm of light, fluffy new snow covering a moderately-packed powder snow surface.

By the time I skied down to the Panorama Course (pictured), the fog had noticeably thinned out. Later, I met two skiers who again told me they loved our site, and continued saying, “Visibility here on Panorama has finally improved. We actually met several years ago through the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School and hit it off, and now we often meet at Happo and ski together.”

Before finishing out the day I talked with one last group of 3 from Tokyo and Aichi (pictured). After saying they often check our resort reports, one of them told me that they fell because of the thick fog as they were descending from the top of Usagidaira, heading for the poles on skier’s right. (It actually sounds like they were referring to the Tenbo Course.) Continuing along the Olympic II Course and further down the mountain, the groomed areas had moderately-firm, wet snow surfaces.
