This week’s daily new snowfall totals were as follows: Mon. 40cm → Tue. 40cm → Wed. 10cm → Thurs. 30cm → Fri. 40cm! The only real break during a week of near constant, heavy snow was Wednesday’s sunny skies. With the snow that lasted all day yesterday finally winding down, powder hunters were out in full force this morning, jumping on the Alpen Quad as it began operating at 8:30.

The groomed portion of Usagidaira had 2 to 3cm of fresh snow topping the well-packed powder snow surface leading to the ungroomed area alongside the Alpen Quad lift, where there was around 40cm of fluffy, fresh snow! Despite windcrust on the surface, or maybe because of it, I found myself sinking very little, and I was able to fully enjoy the feeling of floating on fresh powder. I spoke with the father of a family from Nagano Prefecture’s Chino City (pictured, right), who told me he loved our site and exclaimed that he was loving all the fresh powder. (The person stuck in the snow in the background is their child.) Both the Panorama Course and the area along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad had firmly-groomed powder snow surfaces dusted with 2 to 3cm of new snow, the remained in good shape for quite a long time.

The Central Course (pictured), Shirakaba Slope and other groomed areas at the bottom of the resort were also composed of packed powder surfaces. The ungroomed area of Central had between 20 to 25cm of fluffy, new snow resting atop the moderately-firm, undulating base. Tomorrow looks to be more of the same powder snow conditions, along with great weather!
