I was on the gondola this morning as it departed on time at 8:00, and as I exited, dense snow was falling along with a weak westerly wind. I talked briefly with a snowboarder from Shizuoka Prefecture who told me, “I took a paid day off today to come out and ride. It looks like the Alpen Quad won’t start anytime soon, so I’m heading over to Kitaone.”

The skier’s left portion of Panorama was groomed to the width of 2 grooming machines, and conditions were great with a packed powder base topped off with around 5cm of fresh snow. The ungroomed areas had approximately 20cm of light, new snow. The Panorama beginner course (pictured) had a groomed, soft powder snow surface also covered in around 5cm of fresh snowfall.

As I skied lower down the mountain, visibility improved as I broke through below the clouds around the Central Course. There, the ungroomed surface was characterized by a firm, uneven base below roughly 20cm of new snow. On Shirakaba (pictured) 3 to 5cm of light, new snow was resting atop a tightly-packed groomed surface of wet snow, which made for good skiing conditions.

Once the Alpen Quad got moving at 10:10, I headed up to the top of the resort. It seemed that most of the new snowfall had occured during the morning, and I found the groomed powder surface of the southern portion of Usagidaira, as well as the area alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured) to have around 15 to 20cm of new snow. A Happo regular informed me that the top 40 to 50cm-thick layer of soft snow on Urakuro and Omusubi made for an excellent powder run.
