I hadn’t expected the weather to be quite this good today. The storm that began on the morning of 1/13 (Thurs.), and dumped huge amounts of snow over the last two days, finally subsided and this Saturday turned into a perfect day to be on the slopes. The first two skiers off the lift (pictured) greeted me good morning before skiing away on the groomed powder snow surface of the Riesen Slalom Course.

There seemed to be a morning rush of customers heading to the ungroomed areas of Usagidaira, Kurobishi, Urakuro, Skyline and Omusubi at the top of the ski resort, which had remained closed for the entire day yesterday. The new snow at the top of Usagidaira’s Sodeguro area (pictured) had been noticeably windblown, and the surface was somewhat packed down as a result. However, the further I skied down, the softer and fluffier the snow felt.

The groomed runs everywhere had terrific, squeaky surfaces, and the feeling of sliding on fantastic powder snow continued across Panorama, the Panorama Beginner Course, and the Sakka Slope (pictured). The conditions were good enough that I found myself feeling as if I had suddenly morphed into a much more skilled skier!

Perhaps the most exciting area to be this morning was Omusubi (pictured). From my position far away I could clearly hear energetic shouts of joy, and see the beautiful rooster tails of spray trailing behind skiers and boarders cutting fresh tracks. The Kokusai No. 3 Pair, which had been delayed due to a mechanical inspection, finally got moving around 10:10. (*Until then, the expansive, groomed slopes had been completely empty.)
