Light snow was falling quietly on a windless morning. Around 1cm of new, light snow was dusted across the firmly-groomed, wet-snow surface of the Panorama Course. I was greeted by two snowboarders (pictured) just after the resort opened, before watching them slide down the slope at speed cutting through the thin layer of fresh snow.

Due to yesterday’s heavy snowfall, the start of the Alpen Quad and upper resort lifts was delayed, with the Alpen Quad and Skyline No. 2 Pair commencing operation at 9:00, and the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad getting started at 10:15. Once again, there was around 1cm of fresh snow topping the hard, groomed surface along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured).

The snow began to come down harder starting around 9:00. Just like yesterday, it was a classic, cold January day, but in the absence of wind I was able to stay comfortably warm. On the Usagidaira Slope, the groomed snow surface from the top to the mid section (pictured) was on the hard side, while the bottom portion was reasonably firm and composed of pressed wet snow. The 30cm or so of new snow from yesterday’s storm in the ungroomed areas at the top, had been packed tight by strong winds, and felt somewhat heavy.

Over on the upper half of the Skyline Course, the groomed surface here too was hard, with a dusting of rougly 1cm of new snow. The lower half, as well as the Kitaone Forest Cat Track and Sakka Slope (pictured) had a firm, groomed surface made of wet snow. By the way, the Adventure Park Sakka (pictured, background) is curently open 5 days a week in the Sakka Slope area! Hours are from 10:00 to 16:00, with the park closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
