Last night and today were marked by the arrival of a classic winter low-pressure system bringing heavy snows. The extremely cold upper-atmospheric air meant the return of fine, dry powder snow, but strong winds forced the closure of the gondola and all lifts on the mid and upper part of the mountain. The only lifts open at 8:00 were the Nakiyama Triple and Sakka No. 2 Pair.

Skiing conditions were good on the northern part of the Sakka Slope (pictured), where the groomed snow surface was composed of a mix of yesterday’s wet snow along with some fresh snow, topped off with 3 to 5cm of ungroomed new snow. I was impressed by the methodical turns of an instructor for the Hakuba Happo-One Ski & Snowboard School.

I enjoyed some runs on the 20 to 25cm of fresh, powdery snow covering the moderately packed undulating base below, on the ungroomed side areas as well as the large “Nakikabe” wall. Around the base area, there were several times that swirling winds whipped up snow into tornado-like “snow devils,” but despite the whirling white vortexes, the Nakiyama No. 2 Pair began operating at 9:15 with the Shirakaba No., 1 Pair following suit at 10:45.

Over on the Public Course (pictured) on the south side of Nakiyama, where the route is protected by trees, the direction of the slope and the surrounding terrain combined to keep it relatively unaffected by the winds. Here too the groomed wet-snow base was topped with 3 to 5cm of new snow, which I found was great for gaining speed.
