This morning, Happo was the place to be. Looking at the new snow reported on the upper slopes of ski resorts across the HAKUBA VALLEY, Iwatake reported less than 1cm, Kashimayari around 2cm, Goryu47 roughly 10cm, Hakunori & Cortina approximately 15cm, and Tsugaike and Happo a whopping 30cm! The tightly packed groomed surface of Riesen was topped off with light, new show in the amount of 5 to 8cm, while the ungroomed areas had somewhere between 13 and 15cm.

I noticed advanced skiers and boarders getting off the Alpen Quad and scattering off to ungroomed areas to seek out the roughly 30cm of fresh powder; including Usagidaira, Sodeguro, Kurobishi and Tenbo. The groomed area alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad (pictured) had around 5 to 10cm of new snow. The well groomed base coupled with the new snow made for some fun turns.

Even around 9:00, there was plenty of untouched powder left in the area to skier’s right on the Skyline Course (pictured). The soft, shallowly undulating base was topped off with 20 to 25cm. Strangely enough, the north wind seemed to be blowing harder on Skyline than at the top of the resort.

I talked with a group of 5 from Aichi and Ibaraki Prefectures, as well as Nagano City (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! There’s more new snow up top than we expected. It was another great powder day!” Around 9:30,the sun was shining on Shirakaba, temperatures were creeping higher, and the snow surface seemed to be a bit damp.
